LABOUR PROPOSALS WOULD SEE RETENTION OF BEDROOM TAX - ‘THEY’VE FAILED THE WELFARE TEST AND THE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND’ - SAYS CLYDESDALE’S MSP

Clydesdale Constituency MSP Aileen Campbell has reacted with amazement to reports that Labour’s Devo Commission, which has been looking at possible extensions to the powers of the Scottish parliament, has among a number of crucial areas, also ruled out devolving welfare policy.

Commenting Aileen said:

"If these reports are true, Labour’s proposals for more power for Scotland are meagre to say the least. Labour’s lack of ambition and confidence in our ability to govern ourselves is out of step with Scottish opinion. Recent polling has shown a clear majority want all tax and welfare decisions for Scotland to be made by Scotland’s parliament. But Labour has categorically ruled this out.

"However, at a time when we are seeing many across Scotland suffer as a result of brutal Tory cuts, it is Labour’s proposal that Westminster would retain control of welfare and benefits, that is particularly disappointing. If Labour is happy for welfare decisions to be made in Westminster, then they are clearly content for deeply unfair and irrational measures like the Bedroom Tax to be imposed on households across Scotland.

"If these proposals are true then Labour has failed the welfare test and the people of Scotland".
