Clydesdale MSP, Aileen Campbell met Clydesdale’s Scottish Youth Parliamentarians Megan Russell and Abbie Young at Lanark’s Universal Connections to congratulate them in their new roles and to help promote democracy among young people and the work of the Scottish Youth Parliament.

During her visit Aileen Campbell spoke with Megan and Abbie, who both attend Lanark Grammar School. The new MSYPs told Aileen about why they wanted to be a representative for Clydesdale and what they hope to achieve in their new role.

As the only candidates standing in the area, the girls were guaranteed seats in the youth parliament, but this didn’t stop them campaigning hard to inform their peers about their manifesto commitments.

Youngsters from across Scotland have been voting to elect their local representatives for the Scottish Youth Parliament in March. The elections will decide which candidates will make up the 150 MSYPs of the youth-led and non-party political parliament.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell said:

"The Scottish Youth Parliament plays a vital role in helping to connect young people with democracy. It also gives them the opportunity to make their voice heard and pursue the issues which are important to them.

"Megan and Abbie showed a real passion and desire to do their best as Clydesdale’s MSYPs and it is also great to see young women getting involved in politics. They will be a real inspiration to other young people across Clydesdale.

"The Youth Parliament demonstrates how much young people care about society and want to have a voice in the decisions that affect them.

"My meeting with Megan and Abbie has reaffirmed my belief that extending the voting franchise to 16 and 17 year olds, which was brought to parliament this week, is the right decision.

"I look forward to working with Megan and Abbie as Clydesdale’s representatives and wish them all the best in their new roles."
