Clydesdales MSP Aileen Campbell has hailed the announcement that the Government appointed Reporter has refused an appeal for planning permission for a sand and gravel quarry, at Overburns Farm near Biggar.

The appeal was submitted to Scottish Ministers on behalf of Patersons of Greenoakhill against an earlier refusal of planning permission by South Lanarkshire Council.

Patersons submitted their initial application in 2009, which would have seen a quarry located near to the River Clyde at an area of particular scenic beauty and which has been designated as a Special Landscape Area.

Speaking today, Aileen Campbell said:

"I’m delighted with this decision. This is a clear victory for the people and my heartfelt congratulations go to the local community and in particular the Clyde River Action Group who have worked tirelessly to fight this plan.

?"As the local MSP, I have always made my objections to this proposal clear and liaised closely with CRAG and the community to ensure that my constituents were heard during the lengthy process. A survey of constituents conducted by me in 2009 returned an unequivocal message - the people were opposed to the development and the potential detrimental impact on the surrounding landscape.

"In November 2012, at the Appeal Hearing, I was pleased to have had the opportunity to address the Reporter and to reiterate my deep concerns about the proposal. I was also able to reinforce my belief that the quarry would likely have a negative impact on tourism locally.

"I am pleased the Reporter has concluded that the potential environmental impact of the proposed development outweighed any economic benefits associated with it. I am particularly delighted the people’s voice has been heard and that the landscape of this beautiful part of Scotland will remain intact."
