Aileen Campbell, SNP Candidate for Clydesdale, welcomed the Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary and candidate for Moray, Richard Lochhead for a tour of rural Clydesdale.

Aileen Campbell and local Councillor Bill Holman visited Strathaven Ales earlier in the day and then were joined by the Rural Secretary for a tour of the Strathaven Rural Centre.

Aileen, Mr Lochhead and Cllr Holman were taken on an extensive tour of the wide range of facilities and agricultural businesses at the centre by Managing Director of L.S. Smellie & sons, Stuart Smellie and Tim Caldwell, senior partner of Avondale Veterinary Practice.
On the tour they were shown the animal feed manufacturing plant, met and spoke to staff from the town and country shop, the NFU, and the veterinary practice, gaining a detailed insight into the work of the various businesses at the centre.

The centre was only recently opened in 2010, but L.S. Smellie & Sons have a long and proud history in the area. The company is one of the largest employers in Strathaven and is now under fifth generation family control and has been successfully operating for 137 years.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell said:

"I am very grateful to Strathaven Ales for showing me around their fantastic microbrewery - it was hugely impressive. I am also grateful to L.S Smellie & Sons and all the other businesses for taking the time out today to show Richard, Bill and me around the centre.

"This part of the new Clydesdale constituency is hugely important and makes this seat one of the most marginal in Scotland.

"The company is a credit to the area and the centre is a fantastic facility. We were given an extensive tour and were able to see their feed plant operation, town and country shop and speak with staff from the NFU and Avondale Veterinary Practice, who are all very proud of the centre, and rightly so.

"The SNP has worked hard for rural Scotland over the last four years and we are proud of our record, but believe more progress can be made. I would be proud to be re-elected and able to continue to support and work with rural businesses like L.S Smellie & Sons in Strathaven and across Clydesdale."
Commenting on his visit to the Strathaven Rural Centre, Richard Lochhead said:

"L.S Smellie has a long and proud history in the area, and everyone at the centre made us feel very welcome. The centre is a credit to everyone involved and I was very impressed by the facilities and expertise of the businesses at the Rural Centre.

"The company is an important player in the local economy and the SNP have worked hard over the last four years to support agricultural and rural businesses like L.S. Smellie & Sons. In our Rural Manifesto we have outlined the SNP’s commitment to continuing this progress and ensuring we have a thriving agricultural sector in Scotland.

"I have worked closely with Aileen in the last parliament. During her time on the Rural Committee and as a MSP she has shown that she will stand up for rural issues and work hard for Strathaven and throughout rural areas across Clydesdale - I endorse Aileen's candidacy for Clydesdale in this very winnable seat for the SNP."
