Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has welcomed news that the 317 bus service linking Lanark and Hamilton via Crossford and the Clyde Valley, has been given a reprieve. Operator First Bus had signalled their intention to withdraw the service from January 2011, but the contract has now been awarded to local operator Stuart’s Coaches.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

"This is good news for people who rely on the Lanark-Crossford-Hamilton service for work or simply getting around.

"Provision of bus services should be more than just a simple calculation of what’s profitable. First Bus have been making unpopular decisions across the SPT area recently, and I’m glad that a local operator has been able to step in to meet demand from residents in Lanark, Crossford and the Clyde Valley who want to use public transport.

"We need to make it as easy as possible for people to find alternatives to the car, especially with fuel prices hitting new highs. That’s not always possible in rural areas, but this is an important route and I’m glad that the service will continue."
