Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has raised concern at the recent findings of Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS). Citizens Advice Scotland has recently published its report Advice in Scotland, which examined the people who use the service and the problems they experience in their lives and also profiled Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB) across Scotland, including North Ayrshire CAB.

The North Ayrshire CAB findings have revealed that claimants of the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) have encountered a number of problems. The study has discovered the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) is failing to monitor and provide support to those who have had their ESA claim rejected and many CAB clients have also found the WCA to be harsh and its results inaccurate leaving many people vulnerable and without financial assistance and support.

Commenting on the North Ayrshire CAB findings, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

"I am concerned at the findings of Citizens Advice Scotland’s report and the North Ayrshire CAB. It has highlighted quite clearly that claimants of ESA and WCA who are often those most in need of assistance are being continually failed by the Department of Work And Pensions.

"In response to these findings I have written to the Minister for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith to request how his department intends to ensure these problems are addressed and claimants in the local area receive the appropriate support.

"I also have asked how the Con-Lib Dem coalition propose to continue to help the most vulnerable in our society in the face of the impending budget cuts to the benefits system"
