Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has told the Scottish Parliament that small businesses in the Clydesdale area are working together to get through the economic downturn. Aileen’s comments shortly before she attends a meeting hosted by Enterprise Minister Jim Mather to discuss the Scottish Government’s support for small businesses across Scotland. Earlier this year the Minister hosted a similar discussion in Biggar for local enterprises in the South of Scotland Region which Aileen represents.

Speaking during the debate in the Scottish Parliament, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

"The Scottish Government has taken many practical steps since 2007 to provide assistance to our small business sector. Jim Mather also visited Biggar, in my region, and hosted an interactive session with representatives from small business communities in the South of Scotland region. Many of the participants spoke afterwards of how encouraged and enthused they felt, not least by the minister's self-evident commitment to helping them to work together to grow the local economy.

"I have continued to keep in touch with those businesses and to help them in various ways, whether by ensuring that they have the right contacts at the local business gateway or by trying to solve seemingly small but important issues such as ensuring that loading bays are properly enforced so that deliveries can arrive on time."

Speaking later outside the Scottish Parliament Chamber, Aileen Campbell added:

"Small local businesses are at the heart of the economy in Clydesdale and across the South of Scotland.

"Following the successful meeting in Biggar, the Enterprise Minister has kindly invited me to participate in a national-level meeting being held in Glasgow next week. That session will discuss the role of the Business Gateway service and other structures that exist to support small and medium enterprises.

"If any local businesses have issues or questions they would like me to raise then, or as always if there is anything I can do to support them in other ways, they should feel free to contact my office."
