Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for South of Scotland, has encouraged residents in the Clydesdale area to attend a special meeting of the Clydesdale Rail Users Action Group (CRUAG) being held on Wednesday 27th October at 7.30pm in the ALVO Office, Hope Street, Lanark.

Her call comes after she held meetings with local campaigners and Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson MSP regarding links between Clydesdale railway stations and Glasgow and Edinburgh. After meeting with the campaigners, Aileen wrote to the Transport Minister who then offered to meet with Aileen to discuss the issues, including the possibility of new services between Glasgow and Edinburgh stopping at Carstairs station.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

"After meeting with local campaigners, I was pleased to have the opportunity to take their concerns directly to the Transport Minister.

"Transport Scotland has already outlined some of the difficulties it sees with stopping trains at Carstairs in terms of journey times and associated running costs. I believe there is a case to be made for joining up Clydesdale on the rail network, and I hope a good turnout at the CRUAG meeting on Wednesday will help to get the campaign rolling.

"The Scotrail franchise must be renewed in 2014 and that would seem to me to be a sensible opportunity for all these issues to be examined, and perhaps gives CRUAG and local campaigners a target to aim for. I’ll certainly be happy to support them in whatever way I can."
