Aileen Campbell, SNP Candidate for Clydesdale, has condemned Labour’s announcement that it wants to scrap the SNP Government’s Council Tax freeze.

The SNP Government has budgeted for a Council Tax freeze in each year of the current Scottish Parliament session, providing local authorities with an extra ?70million each year to fund the policy.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell said:

"After wrecking the economy Labour now want ordinary Scots to pay for the mess they created. When Labour was in power between 1997 and 2007, Council Tax went up by 60% across Scotland, costing average households in Clydesdale nearly ?400 extra. Local Labour politicians should say whether they support their leader’s plans to increase Council Tax for Clydesdale residents.

"The SNP Government has helped hard-pressed households by freezing council tax year on year - saving average households nearly ?300 when people’s finances are under real pressure.

"We want to keep doing that next year - just as we want to abolish the unfair council tax in favour of a fair local income tax."
