Calm before the storm, as the snow began to hit in February

Local authorities are set to benefit from extra funding to cover the cost of roads maintenance and make additional repairs to road surfaces, following the extreme winter weather .

Finance Secretary Derek Mackay has decided to allocate an additional £10 million for all 32 councils; the distribution details will be agreed with local council umbrella group COSLA.

Scotland experienced unprecedented levels of extreme weather this year, with the first-ever Red Alert for snow issued by the Met Office in late February.

That has meant unexpected additional costs to the maintenance budgets of local authorities, and caused more damage to Scotland’s road network.
