Wishaw General Hospital

From today parents of premature and sick newborn babies will receive help meeting the additional costs they face as a result of their child being in hospital.

The Scottish Government has launched a new £1.5 million fund, the Neonatal Expenses Fund, to enable parents to spend as much time as possible with their babies, while they are receiving care within a neonatal unit.

It is estimated that the fund will help more than 8,000 families a year with food and travel costs.

Having a premature or sick baby is a hugely testing and emotional time for parents. Getting to and from the hospital every day can be a big additional expense and the Neonatal Expenses Fund can help by easing the financial pressure of being able to get to the baby.

Being able to spend more time at the hospital means parents can be involved in the clinical decisions being taken about the baby's care and helps them bond with their baby.

The funding can be claimed through NHS Boards.
