Royal Bank in Biggar faces closure, along with branches in Carnwath, Douglas, Lesmahagow and Strathaven.

On Friday last week I met with representatives of RBS to explain my disappointment and frustration about this latest round of closures that, I believe, will disproportionately impact Clydesdale.

Previous rounds of closures have meant Clydesdale has lost branches in Abington, Forth and Carluke.

This latest announcement means every branch apart from Lanark will go.

While, on one level, I am appreciative of the bank's local management who are working to try and mitigate the impact of losing all of these banks, the fact remains the banks will leave a big gap and hole in the communities they serve.

The Bank themselves, have conceded that the closures will be 'painful' for customers.

I have been told that the bank plans to operate its mobile unit in areas impacted by the closure, there will be a community banker to provide face to face advice, and Lanark will be helped to cope with increased demand.

I know that banking has changed with many more people using on-line facilities. However, the fact is the public helped the bank at its time of need and RBS's decision to close so many of our local banks seems brutal.

I will continue to support efforts, particularly those of my colleagues at Westminster, to get the bank to reconsider and for the UK government to apply pressure on behalf of the majority shareholder.
