SNP MSP for Clydesdale, Aileen Campbell has added her support to a call by Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead for retailers and food companies to support Scottish farmers.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and the Environment Richard Lochhead made the plea to retailers during an agriculture debate in the Scottish Parliament last week.

Ms Campbell added her support to the campaign, she said:

"I am proud to support the Scottish Government’s bid to encourage businesses to back Scottish producers who do so much to help maintain our food and drink sector. We’re lucky in Clydesdale to have so many independent retailers and cafes showcasing local produce but we could certainly do with more support from the big retailers. South Lanarkshire Council could also be doing more to support our farmers and food producers.

"It has been a difficult summer weatherwise for our farmers, so we can do our bit as consumers to encourage businesses to use Scottish produce when they can. For dairy producers, it has been a particularly tough period with low milk prices therefore any boost from food and drink retailers would only be welcomed.

"We as a country need to support our farmers which in turn supports economic growth and job opportunities. Making the choice to help Scottish producers is a sustainable and positive way of contributing to the economy at local and national levels."

Commenting in the Scottish Government news release on the matter, Mr Lochhead said:

"We must all of us - governments, consumers, and food companies - do what we can to support our farmers and crofters in their hour of need.

"Retailers and the food service sector account for £200 billion of sales in the UK. In the face of very poor weather and low lamb and milk prices, these companies can clearly make a massive difference and must take their responsibilities seriously."
