Aileen Campbell MSP met with representatives from Abellio on Thursday (27th August) regarding the on-going problems with rail service cancellations in Clydesdale. The meeting came about following previous concerns over the service on the Lanark line and the new timetable implemented in December 2014. Following concerns that there have been numerous services cancelled by staff shortages Scotrail have announced that they are recruiting 100 extra drivers to improve cover. Aileen has also brought her concerns to the attention of the Transport Minister and is keeping him up-to-date with her efforts to ensure the Clydesdale service is reliable for all passengers.

Aileen Campbell said:

"I requested a meeting with Scotrail to ensure they understood the very real problems my constituents are facing when trying to use the rail service from Lanark and Carluke. My constituents have grave concerns about the delays, cancellations and unreliability of the service and explained to me the impact this is having on their work, child care arrangements and other commitments. They are looking to Scotrail to ensure effective communication and real improvements to the service.

"Scotrail outlined a number of initiatives to try and remedy some of the issues we discussed - such as better and more accurate ways to track train punctuality, the introduction of a new compensation scheme for delays, and recruiting more drivers to cope with staff shortages. This recruitment is particularly welcome and recognises the need to have enough personnel to provide a good public service. Scotrail also outlined their keenness to continue working with local groups who may want to bring about improvements to the stations in their community.

"However, I am still incredibly concerned that passengers continue to experience delays and cancellations and still don’t feel they are getting the service that they pay, and pay handsomely, for. That is why I will continue to work with Scotrail to achieve tangible and meaningful improvements and will also be taking the issues to the Minister in order that he is fully aware of the situation in Clydesdale. My constituents don’t have the luxury of lots of travel options and so absolutely need their public train service to be reliable and consistent. While Scotrail will point to many improvements and their endeavours to create them, I need to ensure the Minister and the operators recognise and understand the complete picture which includes constituents who want a reliable service."
